Wates & JLL Win Silver Green Apple Environment Award For Energy Management System

Three Wates FM operatives in front of their van An environmental partnership between Wates FM and JLL has received a silver International Green Apple Environmental Award as part of a campaign to find the greenest technologies.

The award was presented to Wates FM and JLL in recognition of their partnership to pilot an innovative Energy Management System (EMS) Proof of Concept System to aid intelligent building management and reduce carbon emissions.

Wates FM and JLL competed against more than 500 other nominations in the International Green Apple Awards and were presented with their award at a ceremony in the Houses of Parliament this week (November 15th).

The project was funded from the profits of Wates FM’s contract with JLL at 45 Church Street in Birmingham, enabling it to pilot the EMS system for 12 months, with both businesses working together to closely monitor and enhance building performance.

The EMS system has facilitated data capture, enabling the team to track large uses of energy that can be assessed for reduction. Since installation of the EMS, Wates and JLL have identified a saving of 27% on air handling at 45 Church Street.

Following the International Green Apple Award success, Wates FM has gained Green World Ambassador status, with its winning paper published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice.

Becoming a Green World Ambassador will also entitle Wates FM to represent the UK in the Green World Environment Awards, which are held in a different country every year.

The Green Apple Awards are run by The Green Organisation - an international, independent, non-profit, non-political environment group that began in 1994 to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world.

James Gregg, Managing Director of Wates FM, commented: “Our pioneering partnership with JLL is an exceptional example of what can be achieved when we turn a traditional customer-contractor relationship into something much more collaborative. The trust and mutual respect our businesses share made possible a truly innovative project; we believed in a green technology and invested a proportion of our JLL contract profit into sponsoring the system at 45 Church Street for a year, with the ultimate aim of improving our client’s carbon reduction strategy. We are very proud of the project and to have received the silver Green Apple Award.”

Dawn Wise, Client Group FM Director JLL, commented: “JLL are delighted to have collaborated with Wates FM to achieve the International Green Apple Award at 45 Church Street. Achieving this award has demonstrated absolute recognition of sustainability excellence for all stakeholders. The initiative to pilot the scheme was an amazing success for JLL and Wates FM, a huge step forward in the direction of a Net Zero future. More so than ever before, it is essential that we all do as much as we can, to help combat climate change. The success of the scheme at 45 Church Street along with recognition received from the Green Organisation affords us the inspiration to look forward to other opportunities within other properties. We need to be innovative in our approaches, and JLL and Wates FM achieved that perfectly.”
