CIEH Welcomes Newly Elected MPs And Sets Out Ambitious Post‑Election Engagement Plan
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) congratulates all newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) following the recent general election. We are excited to work alongside both new and returning MPs to champion the critical environmental health related issues that impact the wellbeing of communities across the UK.
Throughout the election campaign, CIEH engaged with parliamentary candidates through our targeted pledge campaign, which saw numerous candidates commit to prioritising environmental health issues. We are pleased to announce that at the time of writing, 11 of these pledge signatories have been successfully elected to Parliament. We look forward to collaborating with these newly elected MPs to turn these commitments into tangible action.
Key priorities for the new parliamentary term:
- Engaging with Environmental Health policies: CIEH will work closely with MPs to foster engagement to ensure robust policies that protect public health, and the environment are developed and implemented.
- Raising awareness and understanding: Over the coming weeks, CIEH will circulate a parliamentary briefing to all newly elected MPs highlighting the importance of environmental health. Additionally, we will conduct targeted outreach to Ministers in the new Government once it has been formed.
- Promoting the establishment of an All‑Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Environmental Health: We will advocate for the creation of an APPG dedicated to addressing environmental health issues, fostering cross‑party collaboration and focused discussions.
CIEH aims to carry out coordinated outreach activities, particularly focusing on MPs who signed our pledge campaign. The goal is to establish solid foundations for meaningful, sustainable, and long‑term engagement with MPs throughout this new parliamentary term.
CIEH remains committed to advocating for policies that ensure safer, cleaner and healthier environments for all. CIEH will closely monitor the King’s Speech on 17th July for legislative developments outlining the immediate priorities of the new government, advocating to ensure that these proposals align with our vision and mission.
Mark Elliott, President of CIEH, said: “We are delighted to see a new cohort of MPs, many of whom have shown a clear commitment to engaging with CIEH and to promoting environmental health in Parliament.
This election marks a significant opportunity for us to strengthen our advocacy efforts and work collaboratively with policymakers to achieve meaningful progress. Together, we can ensure that environmental health remains a top priority in the new Parliament.”
