Renewables Power 10% of NHS Estate

British Gas to provide NHS Property Services with clean electricity for facilities it manages for the NHS England.

NHS Property Services (NHSPS) has signed a contract to source 100% of its electricity demand from renewable sources.

Via Inspired Energy NHSPS has signed a deal with British Gas, to provide it with 100% renewable electricity to all its properties across England by April 2020.

NHSPS is responsible for around 11% of the NHS estate, totalling more than 34 million sq ft, with over 3500 properties, spanning hospitals, health centres and doctors’ surgeries.

By moving to 100% renewable electricity, NHSPS will offset over 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

The use of renewable electricity won’t increase costs to either NHSPS tenants or NHSPS itself.

The move follows the launch of the ‘For a greener NHS’ campaign.

The NHS is currently responsible for around 4-5% of the UK’s carbon footprint. In September 2019, NHS chief executive Simon Stevens said the NHS would be “accelerating” efforts to tackle climate change with a series of co-ordinated measures to reduce its carbon output.

On top of being responsible for over 11% of the NHS estate itself, NHSPS provides property and facilities management expertise to the NHS.
