Zumtobel Group lighting brands Thorn and Zumtobel have provided a complete solution for the refurbishment of Christopher Addison House situated in Hackney, London E8. The project includes a selection of feature and functional luminaires for the building’s rejuvenated offices. The new lighting will substantially cut carbon emissions and energy consumption and features the latest LED lighting technology, alongside the installation of presence detection and daylight dimming controls to reduce energy consumption by over 50%.

Christopher Addison House incorporates a broad range of workplace settings including break out spaces, quiet areas, kiosks and conference rooms in addition to public services facilities. The scheme has significantly improved the space-efficiency of the building, creating space for additional desks strategically-integrated with the new flexible working and collaborative areas.

Zumtobel Group worked with main contractor ISG and electrical consultants Waterman Group to provide a full project solution for the refurbishment, providing luminaires that would work with the existing wiring points whilst meeting the specific lighting requirements. One issue within the project was the tight ceiling void with requirement for air return and fixed mounting positions which had to be considered for the lighting upgrade.

The offices have been illuminated with a bespoke version of Zumtobel’s, MELLOW LIGHT evolution luminaire that incorporates a special concealed air handling vent that allows for airflow of up to 34 litres per second without any loss of performance. MELLOW LIGHT is available in 3000 K, 4000 K and tuneable white 3000 – 4000 K options and is fully compliant (EN 12464-1) for office applications with a UGR < 19.

Thorn’s Chalice LEDs also illuminate the office spaces. The high performance LED downlight offering exceptional efficiency which, combined with a unified glare ratio <22, CRI 80 and a high efficacy of 106lm/W make Chalice perfect for high quality lighting applications. Both MELLOW LIGHT evolution and Chalice offer a lifetime of up to 50,000 hours before luminous flux is reduced to 90%.

The stairwell lighting includes Zumtobel’s LINCOR slender, surface-mounted luminaires offering excellent uniform direct lighting in an area where there is constant activity. The luminaire is ultra-compact and available in single or dual length and is available in various colour temperature options.

Thorn’s robust Aquaforce Pro and ForceLED luminaires are installed in the risers and back of house stairwells. Aquaforce Pro has been designed to resist ambient temperatures and is available in a choice of light distributions options, with its IP66 rating it is ideal for back of house areas.  ForceLED is a robust, yet compact IP66 luminaire with a unique prismatic diffuser and wireless integrated controls.

Thorn’s Voyager emergency luminaires provide functional and essential illumination of all the escape routes throughout and Zumtobel’s LITECOM lighting management system optimises the lighting solution of the entire building with regards to visual comfort and energy efficiency.

External lighting includes Thorn’s Katona slim, functional luminaire which is available in either a circular or square option. Katona is perfect for both internal and external applications and can be installed onto walls or ceilings. It has a IP65 rating for protection against dust and water and also an IK10 rating making it perfect for public circulation areas.

Waterman’s Director of Building Services, Mark Terndrup, said; “It’s a great opportunity to transform this building and the sustainability initiatives proposed reflect the desire to not only create an exceptional environment for the building users, but to revitalise the building and drive down the carbon footprint in operation over the coming years.”
