More Staff Needing Health And Wellbeing Support

David McCormack, CEO of HIVE360 2021 saw record numbers of workers seeking specialist help and support with their mental and physical health and wellbeing – and it’s predicted to continue this year. Businesses have to refresh or overhaul what they do to support workers, says David McCormack, CEO of specialist outsourced PAYE payroll, employee benefits and engagement company, HIVE360, with benefits that match their needs.

2021 had a significant impact on the UK’s labour market, especially on work-related stress, burnout and technostress, which continue to be issues for employers and employees both in the workplace and working at home.

Analysis of the 2021 usage data of our mobile employee pay and benefits app Engage reveals that around two-thirds (60%) of UK workers actively sought help and support with their mental and physical health and wellbeing in 2021.

User requests focussed on counselling services, health and fitness advice, GP and doctor support services, employee assistance services, and carer support and guidance.

The figures are echoed by a recent report* from the Health and Safety Executive, which found over 800,000 people experienced work-related stress, anxiety or depression last year, with rising workloads, lack of support, and changes at work being cited as the top causes.

Why Employee Health And Wellbeing Matter

The dynamics of the workplace have changed dramatically and mental health for employees is far more important than ever before, and must be prioritised as a critical factor of how businesses support their wellbeing.

Strong employee wellbeing is not only essential for worker’s overall health, it’s also crucial for staff engagement, productivity, and retention, with poor mental health often at the root of long-term absence issues too.

But by having a supportive culture for your workforce, enforcing a wellbeing programme and providing relevant employee benefits, absences can lower, the risks of mental health issues are minimised, efficiency increases, positive morale is created, all of which has a positive effect on your ‘employer brand’.

Work-Life Balance

HIVE360 Logo To achieve a strong work-life balance, we recommend pairing purpose-driven work with a comprehensive employee benefits system, to ensure workers feel valued.

Providing tools and benefits that support employees’ wellbeing must be at the heart of this, and company culture; the key is creating an employee benefits programme that is in-tune with what they want, when they want it.

The solution is for employers to take advantage of mobile tech tools focused on employee engagement, benefits and rewards. And select benefits that help a work-life balance and tackle the record-breaking high in the cost of living too. So look for benefits solutions that provide 24/7, confidential access to specialist mental health and wellbeing support and resources, and that help workers’ pay go further with savings and discounts on everyday spending.
